SACP Western Cape supports the student protest against exorbitant fees and sky-high fee increments

19 October 2015

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Western Cape supports the student protest against the exorbitant fee increment by students from the University of Cape Town. We wish to advise students to maintain utmost discipline in the struggle to advance and defend the right to education: discipline is the mother of all victories.

As the SACP, we strongly believe that the students' concerns are completely justifiable. The managements of the universities of Cape Town, Stellenbosch and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology have placed are prioritising the use of sky-high fee increases to exclude students from working class and poor families rather than expand access for them.

This is yet another example of finacialisation to the detriment of working class and poor families. There is no justification for double digit fee increases: 10% by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 11.5%by the University of Stellenbosch and 10.3% by the University of Cape Town. The SACP in the Province considers this a total abuse of institutional autonomy and a clear indication that our universities have absolutely no interest in serving students from working class and poor families.
