Statement on adoption of interim arrangements during proceeding in the National Assembly

30 July 2015

The SACP welcomes the adoption of a set of rules to deal with disruptions in the National Assembly. The SACP particularly welcomes the balance struck between the right to freedom of speech and the need to protect the dignity and smooth functioning of parliament.

The SACP hopes that these are the first steps to deal decisively with hooliganism and anarchy in parliament, and hopes that the presiding officers will deal decisively with any such behavior from now onwards.

The SACP further pleads with all the other organs of the state to respect the separation of powers and allow parliament to draw up and implement its own internal rules for purposes of running its affairs without undue interference.

The SACP fully supports the resolution of the National Assembly. Our country and democracy can no longer afford to be held at ransom by the EFF hooligans.
