SACP statement on e-tolls announcement

20 May 2015

The South African Communist Party (SACP) notes the outcome of the consultation process in which the government announced today a revised approach on Gauteng Highway Improvement Project (GHIP), the so-called e-tolls. The SACP reiterates its policy stance, that the future of our country`s transportation lies in a reliable, accessible, safe and affordable public transport system in terms of which we believe the GHIP reflected lack of proper prioritisation from the onset and unfortunately committed the country into a debt that must be paid.

Compared to what applied until the announcement was made today, the outcome of the consultation embarked upon to respond to the concerns of the people represents a positive step forward:

The SACP calls on the working to be vigilant that public infrastructure must be publicly funded!
