SACP is saddened by the deaths and injuries suffered when a building collapsed in Nigeria, and calls for thorough investigation

17 September 2014

The South African Communist Party is deeply saddened by all the deaths and injuries that occurred, following the collapse on Friday, 12 September, of a multi-story building that was located within the premises and was reportedly used as a guest house of The Synagogue Church of All Nations in Lagos, Nigeria. The Communist Party sends its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of all those who died, independently of all nationality. According to our government, by last night the death toll of South Africans affected was 67; the total death toll is yet to be tallied as recovery and clean-up operations are still underway.

"The Communist Party also wishes speedy discovery to all those who sustained injuries", said Comrade Solly Mapaila, SACP 2nd Deputy General Secretary last night.

The SACP has noted an allegation by the church that the building was brought down by a deliberately calculated act. The SACP is calling for thoroughgoing investigations to determine the actual cause of the collapse of the building and appropriate legislative and legal measures to address it.
