The SACP scores a decisive tactical victory for workers against Arcellor Mittal

15 August 2014

The SACP Gauteng Province scored a decisive victory already in the few weeks following its protest march against one of the largest world steel producer, Arcelor-Mittal. SACP welcomes the good news that already, this week, one of the neo-Nazi and fascist prototype, Mr Roelof Jansen, General Manager for Arcelor-Mittal in Vereening has resigned with immediate effect.

Mr. Roelof Jansen is notorious for unleashing racist terror and labour brokers against workers. Whilst welcoming his resignation, the SACP calls on the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) to pursue the investigation in line with our request, and if found guilty, to ensure that he is held fully accountable for any wrong doing against workers.

The SACP also welcomes the good news that the departure of Mr. Roelof Jansen coincided with the immediate re-instatement of comrade Mosa Monageng who works at Arcelor-Mittal, Vereening. Comrade Monageng is a leader of the SACP fighting for the rights of workers and also leading the process of establishing the SACP Industrial Unit. Our party is pleased that comrade Monageng reported for work yesterday. His reinstatement vindicates our view that his suspension was a rooi-gevaar political witch-hunt due to his association with the SACP. Comrade Monageng`s re-instatement paves the way for the SACP to launch its Industrial Unit.

The SACP is currently awaiting the response of Arcelor-Mittal to our memorandum delivered on Monday, 4th August 2014. Further action will be announced following the response of Arcelor-Mittal. We are fully aware that profit estimates of Arcelor-Mittal depend on supplying government infrastructure programme with material inputs. The SACP will therefore consider further protests, calling on government to seriously review the purchase of these materials including steel from Arcelor-Mittal. The SACP will in this regard call on government to isolate and black list Arcelor-Mittal along similar lines of Israel linked companies such as Woolworths and many others. Arcelor-Mittal has the blood of workers on its hands of terror. We are pleased that this development strengthens the campaign for the renationalisation of Arcelor-Mittal.
