Statement on Financial Sector Coalition Campaign

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in Phillip Radebe District, Mpumalanga Province, held a successful District Financial Sector Campaign Coalition (FSCC) on 2 August 2014, Matsulu Community Hall in Mbombela. The meeting was attended various stakeholders and organisations, SACP structures, COSATU, SANCO, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO), Traditional Leaders and Church Forums. The seminar considered the current state of the FSCC and transformation challenges in the financial sector and further appointed a task team for the Regional Chapter. The meeting received a keynote address from the FSCC Provincial Chairperson, Cde Mandla Tibane.

The seminar noted numerous challenges which affect various stakeholders within the province, amongst others the following with recommendations.

• The FSCC will intensify the fight against evictions in our communities.
• Other Consumer Issues to embark on include engaging the cell phone industries on the issue of call rates and drop calls.
• We will intensify the struggle to improve the services of Mzansi Account and protect it from the Banks` attempt to do away with or exploit it.
• The seminar called on government to speed up the process of establishing the co-operatives academy, with co-operatives give preference in State procurement.
• We call for the publicly administered fund of all unclaimed pension and retirement fund benefits.
• Co-ordinate a process to form co-operatives banks and other viable forms of collective banking.
• Call for the speedy allocation of the full banking license to the Post Bank.
• We will launch a spirited fight against the selling of debt books by some of the municipalities and fight against the unlawful collection of debts including the garnishee orders.
• We will also build partnerships to unleash the developmental potential within the taxi industry in order to serve the poor and the working class better.
• We will work together to support the SMMEs in the district and further fight for the rights of emerging entrepreneurs against lumpen-tenderpreneurs.

The seminar further mandated the task team to convene a district financial sector summit within two months in order to establish a structure with all other stakeholders and develop a program of action.
