The struggle for Environmental Justice is the struggle for Socialism
As the SACP in the Brian Bunting District, we were delighted when President Zuma announced that the 2014 Mandela Day must be spent on amongst other things taking care of our environment. To us as the SACP, the 2014 Mandela Day present a great opportunity to take forward Chapter seven of the South African to Socialism (SARS) as adopted at our 13th National Congress. In this programme, as the Party we make a point that the struggle for socialism is the struggle for environmental justice.
Our SARS programme further makes an observation "Group areas removals and poorly planned and under-resourced mass urbanization have located the working class in distant and often environmentally problematic areas (prone to flooding, for instance). Poor housing and poor sanitation and energy infrastructure (along with the failure to maintain this infrastructure when it exists) contribute not only to poor health and well- being outcomes for those living in townships and informal settlements, but also lead to the further destruction and pollution of the environment, through for instance, the untreated run-offs of sewage into critical water causes"
Today Friday, 18th July 2014, as part of mobilizing many organs of people`s Power and including Community Work Programme, Expanded Public Works Programme and a range of community based initiatives to take forward this campaign to the next level and educate the broader society about the struggle for environmental justice.
The Party will also engage Cosatu and its affiliates through our Qina Msebenzi campaign so as to ensure that in the context of the work-places this struggle is linked with the Occupational Health and Safety campaign.
This campaign is important in the area of the City of Cape Town because our masses are subjected to broken sewage drains, none removal of waste by the City of Cape Town and particular the working class areas, where an area is developed there is no proper and quality infrastructure.
Against this background and informed by our elections work, the Party in the District will be cleaning Ntsebenziswano High School and the surroundings. The programme will start at 11h00 and it will be led by the SACP`s Provincial Secretary Khaya Magaxa nd the District Executive Committee (DEC)members.
