Probe Sant Higher Education Institute

30 January 2014

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Moses Mabhida Province, KZN, is calling on the Department of Higher Education and Training to institute a wide ranging probe into a controversial private college - Sants Private Higher Education Institution.

Sants hit the headlines recently when it secured a court order against the provincial department of education which resulted in the seizure of more than 700 vehicles of the provincial education department.

The party believes that the probe should cover the following:

  1. On how the institution obtained the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) certificate.
  2. Whether the institution has infrastructure, capacity and experience to provide higher education as it claims.
  3. Whether the department of education in the province also provides bursaries to students enrolled in other teacher training colleges as it does to those enrolled at Sants.
  4. Why the provincial education department does not defend the action instituted against it by Sants Higher Education Institution.
  5. Whether there is no collusion between proprietors of Sants and certain officials within the provincial department of education.

The SACP believes that the investigation would be welcomed by all concerned and will clear the cloud of suspicion on the relationship between Sants and provincial education department.
