SACP statement on price fixing and cullusion by the private sector

4 February 2013

The SACP has noted the reported price fixing by the construction sector in which government has been swindled off money by the sector. This behavior is indicative of private sector conduct to inflate prices when dealing with government.

Price fixing, inflating prices and collusion presents us with the biggest headache in our fight against corruption and signals the extend to which the private sector is as a matter of fact the genesis of corruption is society. In most instances it is only government that takes the flack for these practices and paraded as if by design government and its officials are corrupt.

The SACP calls for a full investigation into the practices of price fixing, price inflation and collusion. This is extremely important in the wake of the roll out of the biggest infrastructure programme in the country. A further review of procurement regulations, especially the element of deviations through which further money is swindled from the public purse must also be reviewed.
