SACP Moses Mabhida Statement on Provincial Matric Results

3 January 2013

The South African Communist Party in the Moses Mabhida Province would like to congratulate the learners, teachers and the department of education for an improved matric results.

The party, however, believes that something better could have been achieved.

The SACP in the Moses Mabhida province is firstly concerned that only 45% of children who enrolled for Grade 1 in 2001 were able to write matric last year.

Secondly, it is also concerned that more than 80% of those who passed received less than 50%. It is also very regrettable that our matric results are geared towards university entrance as opposed to vocational training which is much more needed by the economy.

The SACP is worried that despite the fact that the universities can only absorb 12% of matriculants who pass there is still high focus towards university entrance.

These aspects of matric results are worrying. It is clear that a lot needs to be done to improve the quality of education.

These results don’t reflect the state of our economy. South Africa is a respected regional economies powerhouse but the results that it produces are lagging behind even than of economies such as Botswana, Swaziland etc. Clearly something much more needs to be done.

We call on students to swell the ranks of the Further Education and Training institutions because that is where they will acquire the skills that are needed by our economy.
