Tragic death of aspirant traffic officers in Pietermaritzburg

31 December 2012

The South African Communist Party in the Moses Mabhida Province (KZN) has learnt with shock and sadness of the passing away of seven candidate traffic officers in Pietermaritzburg in the past few days.

The SACP in the Moses Mabhida Province is therefore calling for the establishment of a commission of enquiry to probe circumstances that led to this fatal recruitment exercise.

The party believes that whatever action is taken should be determined by the outcome of the commission of enquiry.

The SACP in the province commends the swift action by the MEC for Transport Honourable Willies Mchunu who has temporarily suspended this recruitment exercise. The recruitment exercise should be temporarily suspended until the outcome of the commission of enquiry.

The party condemns calls by Inkatha Freedom Party for MEC Mchunu to resign.

“It is unfortunate that the IFP has become so politically bankrupt that it even tries to score cheap political points at the expense of thousands of desperate young people who were determined to serve their country. The IFP is trying to score a political goal from an-offside position,” said SACP Provincial Secretary Themba Mthembu.

The SACP in the province would like to convey its deepest condolences to the families and relatives of those who passed away. It is also wishing those who are still recuperating in hospitals a speedy recovery.
