The SACP wishes to express and convey our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the five municipal workers who lost their lives yesterday. These five workers lost their lives as a result of an avoidable accident at their workplace. This tragic loss of life calls into question the health and safety conditions that workers face everyday at Sol Plaatje municipality.
We are observing with concern how the Sol Plaatje Municipality seems to be limping from one crisis to another. We think that the municipality needs to go back to the drawing board and rediscover their mission and vision in order to provide proper leadership to our communities.
The services that Sol Plaatje provide to our people especially working class communities leave much to be desired. There is definitely a need to improve basic service delivery for people centred development at a local level.
To achieve this, it means amongst others that the working conditions of municipal workers must the improved for the better such that we can have a motivated workforce at Sol Plaatje.
We call on Government to fully investigate this incident which resulted in the unnecessary loss of lives of workers. Those who are found to be responsible in relation to this utter negligence must face the full might of the law.
This clearly shows that the working class and the poor remain the most vulnerable in society whatever way you look at it and in this case Sol Plaatje must account for the loss of lives of those workers.
