Statement of SACP PEC in Moses Mabhida Province of a meeting held in Pinetown on 8 to 9 September 2012

10 September 2012

The SACP in Moses Mabhida province held its normal scheduled Provincial Executive Committee meeting on 08 & 09 September 2012 at Pinetown. The PEC was blessed with the addresses by two Politburo members Cde Rob Davies and Cde Ben Martins on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

The PEC reflected on the 13th Congress which was hosted at University of Zululand at Ongoye. The PEC appreciated the praise given on the success of the congress and effort put by the Province. The unity and the revolutionary spirit displayed at the congress negated and disapprove all attacks that were being leveled against the Party and its leaders. The congress proved that the Party is the most united and growing of the all component of the alliance and reiterated the call of the congress to use this unity by giving support to ANC and COSATU who are under severe enemy attack. The PEC wished COSATU to have a uniting and revolutionary congress in the coming week. The PEC also deliberated at the various attacks directed at COSATU and its affiliates. This attack is not only directed at COSATU and progressive trade unions only but it is an attack earmarked to disorganize and weakened the working class as a whole in the light of the crisis of capitalism.

The big prize of these capitalist attack on the working class will be a divided SACP and COSATU hence the attempts to drive wedge between these two socialist axis. It is unfortunate that some worker leaders are falling prey to this agenda. The PEC noted with discontent the attack by our ally NUMSA leadership in their recent CEC press statement. Such attack is considered as one of those most unfortunate incidents that the working class experience from time to time. The PEC urged the structures of the Party to be calm and responsible and desist to replicate these provocations. It was also resolve to increase working relationship with the structures of NUMSA many of them are leaders of the Party.

The meeting also spent some time reflecting on the current challenges facing the country the government and the ruling party the ANC. It was seen that the country and the ANC lead government is in a dire situation emanating from the compromises of negotiation process (Largely sunset clauses), the crisis of capitalism and the exploitation of these by the forces oppose to the ruling party and its leadership. However the meeting strongly believes and recognizes the commitment and effort of the present government and its leadership in meeting these challenges however complex they are. In fact the initiatives of the present government are seen to be very bold and more bias to the working class than any in the last 15 to 20 years. This is contrary to the massive propaganda by the opponents of the current leadership who happened to find pockets of allies within the movement. The PEC called for the working class societies and the citizen of this country to unite and defeat these doomsayers, protect and advance the National Democratic Revolution.

The PEC noted the attempts by the enemies of the National Democratic Revolution and current leadership of disorganizing the unity of our leaders of the Alliance in this Province the weekend media reports by dragging the names of the leaders of ANC in the province into forces that are peddling disunity in the movement. This is seen as a clear indication of the desperation in which these forces find themselves. The SACP in KwaZulu Natal appeal to the ANC not to allow these forces to drive wedges among them and stay united and focused. We believe these attempts by these negative forces assisted and sometimes even lead by the Boerderbond and imperialist media are going to unite the province even more than before.

The meeting welcomes the progress made by the unfortunate incident of Marikana. We also welcome the dropping of murder charges reveled against the striking miners which were clear act of racism and galvanizing of hatred against the government. The PEC agreed with the President that the Marikana incident must not be used for narrow political opportunism. The problems of Marikana are not problems of infighting between NUM and AMCU but the problems between employees and employers of the platinum and gold mines. All of us must give the Judicial Commission of Enquiry the chance to do its work.

The SACP in Moses Mabhida Province welcome the announcement by the Mayor of Ethekwini that all temporary workers are to be made full time including the Metro police. The Party has always been concern by the negative development at this strategic city of the Province and the country. However the Party does not accept the reason forwarded by the Ethekwini Council of not releasing the Manase Report. In fact a such conduct and practice are the one that prompt opponents of the government to oppose the Protection of Information Bill. The conduct of Ethekwini is a contradiction of its own handling of this matter a clear example being the handling of the case of its former Municipality Manager whose name was branded in the media by the council. The SACP demand that the Manase report be released in the name of transparency and public accountability. We also reaffirm the call by the COSATU-SACP Bilateral for a commission of inquiry into the running of the Metro Police.

The SACP is extremely disturbed by the recent announcements that South Africa lagged behind in terms of Education by ranking 140 out of 144 country. Surely this is a serious state of affairs and a crisis. The worst hit areas are in the rural that suffer from lack of adequate facilities and poorly or not trained teachers. As long as South Africa suffers high levels of inequality this will continue to persist as we experience in the health sector. It is high time the government call for a National Education Summit that will come out with a national Consensus of addressing the crisis of Education in South Africa.

Lastly the SACP learnt with shock the news of the assassination of the Chairperson and Secretary of the ANC branch of Oshabeni. The SACP condemn this barbaric act and call for a speedily apprehension of the perpetrators. It is high time now that this province of KwaZulu Natal put their heads together irrespective of political affiliation and come up with a strategy of ridding the province of contract killing industry. A dedicated police unit is now a matter of must.
