SACP North West response to SABC TV reports on the Chris Hani Memorial Lecture held in the North West Province

16 April 2012

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the North West has noted with concern misleading and inaccurate reports by the SABC television related to our Chris Hani memorial lecture addressed by Comrade Gwede Mantashe (SACP National Chairperson) yesterday. According to these reports, the ANC Provincial Chairperson, Comrade Supra Mahumapelo, was interrupted during his speech by people who booed him to an extend that Comrade Gwede Mantashe had to intervene.

For the record, the speech by Comrade Supra was never interrupted at any point. In actual fact, the ANC Provincial Chairperson was well received by the masses in attendance at our memorial lecture. Further it should be noted that at no stage did Comrade Mantashe in his address focus specifically on the conduct of the people in attendance at the memorial lecture. If there was a conduct not consistent with that expected of those who attend our Party activities, it would not have escaped the attention of our National Chairperson and the SACP collective leadership present at this event.

As the SACP we are happy with the number of people who attended our memorial lecture as well as their level of discipline. We therefore wish to dismiss the SABC television reports as mischievous and unfortunate.
