SACP statement on the announcement by NERSA

9 March 2012

The SACP has noted the announcement by NERSA today to give effect to the statement made by the President in his State of the Nation address in relation to electricity prices. Whilst electricity continues to be expensive and the majority still cannot afford it, we welcome the cut of the tariff hike from 25.7% to 16%, a cut of almost 10%. This is indeed a breakthrough for the poor, especially those who rely on free supply.

The electricity tariff reductions are a sign that the country have started to use energy efficiently. The SACP however still urges our communities to use energy wisely. The SACP further urges the business community, some of whom are the biggest consumers, to use elecetricity prudently.

The SACP further urges for a speedy programme to support co-operatives and communities in the green energy initiatives in order to make sure that our people use alternative renewable energy sources and are educated about initiatives to safe energy.

Capitalism is a barbaric system that in its chase for profits will not hesitate to deplete our natural resources. It is for this reason that the working class broadly must take up the campaign for energy saving, afford-ability and the use of renewable energy sources.

The SACP says the working class must act urgently to build Socialism as the only viable alternative to the barbarism of Capitalism that is eating up our natural resources. On its part, SACP structures will continue to effectively lead its campaign for energy saving, increased awareness to the use of renewable energy sources and participate in the 49M Campaign led by government.
