SACP KZN press statement

22 June 2011

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in KwaZulu-Natal has called on all the people implicated in corruption in Umsunduzi to do "the honourable thing" and resign as its deputy mayor Alpha Shelembe.

The SACP in KwaZulu-Natal welcomes the resignation of Umsunduzi Municipality Deputy Mayor. However we do believe that we shouldnt have had to go through this pain to remove him as we believe the fight against corruption is shared by the entire alliance.

The SACP would like to emphasise that his resignation is part of the solution but not the entire solution to the impasse that is taking place in the Moses Mabhida Region.

The SACP believes that those who were relieved of their duties in the Umsunduzi Municipality and those who were cited in the maladministration and corruption allegations in the Umngeni municipality should also do the honourable thing and resign.

The SACP believes that Shelembe`s case has been an eye opener to the public to the depth of the corruption problems facing the Jacob Zuma administration.

"This manifests itself in the form of people who claim to be the champions in the fight against corruption yet they do their best to harbor and protect individuals who are implicated in serious issues of corruption," said SACP KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Secretary Themba Mthembu.

He added that the SACP believes that the Shelembe case should serve as a lesson to those who are trying to protect individuals implicated in corruption such as Shelembe and his company.
