10 May 2011

This morning the University of Fort Hare congregated to confer an Honorary Doctorate on SACP Deputy General Secretary and ANC NEC member, Cde Jeremy Cronin.

The SACP appreciates this gesture from the University of Fort Hare and congratulates Cde Jeremy for this achievement. Cde Jeremy Cronin has served the movement in various capacities with distinction and has been a leading intellectual of our time. He is well known for his poetry and political writings. He also taught at University of Cape Town which accounts for his excellent role as an educator. Cde Jeremy is a dedicated member and cadre of the SACP and a principled communist who does not fear stating his views in the interest of building and deepening our National Democratic Revolution.

As an activist Cde Jeremy has always been on the side of justice even forfeiting white benefit and privilege to fight and campaign for a just and equitable South Africa. This honour is befitting for a revolutionary of his stature and could have not come at an appropriate time for this leading communist intellectual.

The 124 000 or so members of the SACP, 600 000 or so members of the ANC and 1.7 million members of COSATU and millions and millions supporters of the three organisations are proud of you Cde Jeremy and hereby sends their congratulations!!
