SACP concerned about the impact of taxi strike

14 March 2011

As the SACP in the Cape Metro, we are concerned by the impact the ongoing taxi strike will have on the poor working class people. We understand the frustrations of the taxi industry which are caused by the intransigent Provincial and the City`s administration. Our view as the SACP is that Taxi associations must direct their anger at these authorities particularly the stubborn Western Cape MEC for transport and public works.

We are concerned that working families who use taxis as affordable means of commuting as well as school going children who will miss out on their education because of the strike. We further condemn any acts of violence towards other operators and commuters.

We are aware as the SACP in the Cape Metro that most children are brutal affected as their transports were stoned this morning in areas such as Khayelitsha, Kraaifontein etc.

In any struggle waged by any structure, we cannot afford education to be affected. To us education is a societal issue and a top government priority, now we ought to therefore act responsible.

As the SACP we will seek a meeting with structures of SANTACO in the metro to establish ways to bring normality by applying pressure on the regressive and intransigent provincial and city administration.
