SACP statement on the closing date for comments on the Green Paper

7 October 2009

The SACP notes comments attributed to the Minister in the Presidency: National Planning Commission, that the parliamentary ad hoc committee set up to consider the Green Paper on National Strategic Planning should table its report to the National Assembly by the 17th October 2009.

If these remarks are indeed true then they are very unfortunate and dangerous to say the least. To assume that such an important policy proposal could be rushed down our system of governance goes against the spirit of consultation as laid down in our system of governance. The SACP calls for the careful handling of the process to allow for broader consultation and allow stakeholders to extensively engage with the document.

We should desist from a policy development cycle that will not give our people and their various formations enough time to debate and carefully consider such an important document.

The SACP calls for the extension of the deadline to receive comments and suggestions on the green paper.

Issued by the SACP.
