25 November 2008
The SACP, all its members and structures join the country today to mark the beginning of the 16 Days of activism against women and child abuse. As the SACP we abhor women and children abuse.
This year the focus of the campaign for us will be within the context of the 2008 Red October Campaign of launching street committees, whose presence in our communities should go a long way in helping us to eradicate the appalling treatment of women and children in society. Furthermore, we will, in the context of the debate of the transformation on the Criminal Justice System, ensure that we do emerge with a system that is affable to the needs of women and children and decisively deals with any form of abuse perpetrated against them.
In this regard, we continuously make the point that Capitalism has extended limited forms of civil liberty to women and children. It is onlhy under a Socialist South Africa that we will realise the full emancipation of women and children and thus only then will they be accorded the protection that they deserve. We need to continuously campaign hard against patriarchy that is so deeply linked to the capitalist system. This includes a massive community outreach programme with progressive women organizations to defeat this scourge. Work in rural and farming communities must be intensified to restore the dignity of women and children in our society.
