The SACP welcomes moves to amend the Broadcasting Act

27 June 2008

The SACP welcomes and applauds parliament on the measures that it has taken in passing the memorandum to amend the Broadcasting Act to include clauses for the dissolution of the SABC Board.

As the SACP we have repeatedly said the we do not have any confidence that the current board can provide strategic leadership to the SABC and in recent months it has indeed turned the broadcaster into nothing else but a circus.

We reiterate our call for urgent action because we are concerned that this crisis has paralysed the SABC and diverted it away from the many tasks that it has in the current and forthcoming period, and this includes to adequately prepare and educate our people about elections, preparations for 2010, the digital migration and many other such huge challenges.

The current board has proven not to have capacity to provide leadership on the issues mentioned above.

We further applaud parliament for taking its oversight role serious in protecting the interest of the public and public institutions meant to serve them.

Issued by the SACP.
