SACP Calls For The Protection Of Workers At Petrol Filling Stations

26 June 2008

The SACP is deeply concerned at the growing abuse of workers at Petrol filling stations especially by motorists who fill in petrol and either speed off without paying or refuse to pay. This has amongst other things resulted in the brutal killing of Armanda Muhaswa, a petrol attendant at a petrol station in Zola, Soweto, during the last weekend for unpaid petrol.

It is unacceptable that some of the members of the community have resorted to these measures in order to avoid the high cost of fuel. We need not direct our anger to ordinary workers.

We call on all motorists and South Africans to join the SACP in our campaign for the renationalisation of SASOL, the review of the formula to determine the price of fuel, and that we work jointly with NUMSA to engage the industry to improve safety measures for workers.

The SACP pledges its full support to NUMSA in its engagements with the petroleum industry to find solutions to these problems.
