The South African Communist Party (SACP) congratulates the General Secretary of AKEL, Cde Demetris Christofias on his landmark victory which qualifies his candidacy for the next round of Cyprus Presidential elections.
Cde Christofias scored a massive 33.29% and will face a rightwing candidate in the final voting round on Sunday.
In our view, this electoral outcome represents a popular historical momentum, in which a trajectory created by Turkish policy of ineptitude can be altered.
We are fully behind efforts to break the occupational status quo that divides the Turkish-Cypriot community through an enforced separation. This partitioning is as brutal as apartheid was in South Africa.
We can see the fruits of a more comprehensive framework adopted by Comrade Christofias, promoting a just and viable solution, on the basis of international law, never losing sight of the basic rights of the people, to social-political and economic justice and a firm resolve on settling the pertinent question of Cyprus re-unification.
The SACP fully supports the Cypriot unification policy of AKEL’s and its Presidential candidate, Cde Christofias, and wish him a great resounding success during Sunday’s Presidential elections.
