2007 International Pedagogy Congress begins

BY JOEL MAYOR LORAN – Granma daily staff writer –More than 2 million people have learned how to read and write via Cuban method

WITH the addition of its most recent versions in Quechua and Aymara for Bolivian indigenous people, the Cuban “I Can Do It” literacy method is now in 12 languages, said César Torres, dean of the Latin American and Caribbean Pedagogical Institute (IPLAC), during the inauguration ceremony of the 2007 International Pedagogy Congress at the Karl Marx Theater in Havana.

The children’s theater group La Colmenita welcomed the educators who are participating in the event.

More than two million people have learned how to read and write via this method, which provides a methodology but respects the native languages of the peoples where it is used. In Bolivia, the stated goal is to declare that country free of illiteracy in 30 months.

Cuba was the only country that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization awarded the 2006 Rey Sejong Literacy Prize for its results in helping other nations in that field.
