SACP Statement Congratulating the ANC in its Overwhelming Election Victory

Friday, 10 March 2006

The South African Communist Party (SACP) congratulates the ANC for the overwhelming victory in the 2006 local government elections.

We also thank our people for again giving their movement the overwhelming mandate to make local government work better for them

In our view as the SACP the people?s victory in these elections indicates very clearly that the people of our country still have confidence in the ANC-led government contrary to what our enemies and detractors have been saying. The overwhelming victory of the ANC in these elections came as a result of mass work done by our movement including, SACP cadres who campaigned throughout the country including in the remotest rural areas of our country.

Through our ?Know Your Neighbourhood Campaign? (KYNC) the SACP has ensured that all its cadres are involved within the communities and are doing work related directly to service delivery. We will intensify this
campaign to ensure that indeed our people are directly involved in making their lives better in their localities.

Now the real work starts, to realise the commitments we have made to our people. We expect all ANC councilors to abide by the oath they have taken to serve the people without any expectations of personal or
material gain. We also expect ANC councillors to hold regular meetings to report back and take mandates from the communities they represent.

On our side as the SACP we will ensure that we continuously mobilise our communities to support the elected ANC councillors.

We also wish to take this opportunity to congratulate all the elected councillors especially those from the ranks of the SACP who have been elected in their own right as ANC councillors. We expect all councillors
who are members of the SACP to lead by example, through total dedication to the service of the people. They should especially ensure that **this victory is a victory with and for workers and the poor!

This victory should be as an important platform to strengthen the organs of people?s power for better delivery of basic services. .
