The South African Communist Party (SACP) notes the proposal by the President of SANCO Comrade Mlungisi Hlongwane for an amendment to the constitution to permit a President of the country to serve for more than two terms.
The SACP mindful and respectful of the right of SANCO to raise issues of this nature would like to clarify its stand on this matter once and for all. As the SACP we believe that the decision to limit the presidential terms to two was in all respects one of the best decisions we made as a country and as a movement. It will therefore be very wrong to amend the existing constitution on this matter.
We believe as the SACP that our country is not in short of progressive leadership, in actual fact our country with the population of more than 43 million it will very wrong to create the impression that we are in short of progressive leadership.
As the SACP we will never support the changing of the two terms Presidency, irrespective of the incoming incumbent of the office.
