Jacob Zuma should not resign as Deputy President of the ANC and Country

Friday, 16 December 2005

The Young Communist League of South Africa does not believe that Jacob Zuma should resign as Deputy President of the country and of the ANC based on the guilty finding on Shabir Shaik made by Judge Hilary Squires today.

The YCL believes that the Judge only found Shabir Shaik guilty, and not Jacob Zuma, and that calls for his resignation smacks of opportunism and should not be heeded to.

The YCL remains steadfastly in support of Zuma, and believes that a judge in court cannot question his unifying character and commitment to the movement.

We support and are committed to the constitution and the judiciary, but believes that the judiciary should act in a manner that restores confidence and earns respect from the public.

We are perplexed that the Judge lengthily drew the Deputy President into the whole case, falling into the trap of the prosecution team and some people who are against the Deputy President. We believe that the Judge played politics, rather than justice.

We believe that the Deputy President was not on trial, and that it is not consequential that if Shaik, therefore he is guilty.
