Transforming The Financial Sector: Goals, Progress & Challenges

Wednesday, 27 July 2005

The Financial Sector Campaign Coalition conference, “Transforming the Financial Sector: Goals, Progress and Challenges”, will take place in Johannesburg on 25 and 26 July 2005.

The conference will be addressed by the Minister of Finance, Trevor Manuel and the Minister of Housing, Lindiwe Sisulu, as well as leaders of the Coalition, FSCC chairperson Blade Nzimande and Cosatu president, Willy Madisha. Other speakers will be members of the Financial Sector Charter Council and representatives of financial industry trade associations, including Gloria Serobe of the LOA and Cas Coovadia of the Banking Association.

The conference will assess progress in transforming the financial sector since the Financial Sector Summit of 2002 and the launch of the Financial Sector Charter in 2004.

The wide-ranging programme will examine Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment in the financial sector; access to financial services, credit and low-income housing finance; and proposed new laws on co-operative banks and retirement funds. Discussions on BEE, bank charges, access to insurance, affordable housing finance, pension funds regulation and retirement funds policy reform are likely to generate lively debate among financial sector representatives and delegates from the Coalition’s 50 member organisations.

The conference will take place at the Indaba Hotel, William Nicol Drive, Fourways

We invite members of the press to join us for all of the sessions on Day One, Monday 25 July and to the closing plenary session on Day Two, Tuesday 26 July. An invitation, programme and map are attached.
