SACP deeps its Revolutionary Banner in Honour of its Gallant Fighter Comrade Lawarence Madimetja Phokanoka who passed on

The South African Communist Party (SACP) mourns the passing away of its lifelong stalwart and cadre Comrade Lawrence Madimetja Phokanoka.

Comrade Phokanoka was a member of both the ANC and the SACP until his last days; he died after a long illness at the age of 67. He represented the ANC and the SACP in a number of forums as a delegate of both this organisations he so much loved and build with pride.

He was bestowed the Honorary Life Chairpersonship of the SACP in the Province, the SACP’s 11th Congress of 2002 bestowed on him one of the most highest awards in the SACP, the Moses Kotane award for his lifelong contribution in the struggle for National Liberation and Socialism.

Comrade Phokanoka was a member of the glorious Luthuli detachment which fought in the wankie – spolilo battles against the Ian Smith and the apartheid regime forces, he was the second Commissar after Comrade Thembisile “Chris” Hani in the same detachment. He was captured in Zimbabwe by the Smith regime and tried and sentenced, he was transferred to South Africa were he completed his sentence in Robben Island.

He was a great Marxist/ Leninist theoretician; he made his last revolutionary contribution to our movement at the recently held ANC National General Council in Tshwane.

As the SACP we lower our Red flag in his Honour and memory, as a Communist, a leader of our people and a friend of the workers and the poor he will be remembered for his thought and courage, and his gallantry will always inspire us all to fight for a Socialist South Africa.

Rest in Peace great patriot of the working class and the poor!
