SACP statement on the NPA announcement on charging cde Jacob Zuma

Monday, 20 June 2005

The SACP has taken note of today’s NPA announcement that it will be charging ANC deputy president, cde Jacob Zuma. While we are obviously saddened at this turn of events, we believe that this step is now both logical and necessary. We trust that a court trial will shed light and bring finality to this matter.

In many respects today’s NPA announcement is a step that should have been taken some two years ago, when the former head of the NPA announced that there was a prima facie case against cde Zuma, but no charges would be pressed against him. This earlier announcement placed cde Zuma and the government and organisation in which he served in an untenable situation. It also created an impression of a political rather than a judicial agenda.

Cde Zuma has consistently said that he wanted his own day in court. We trust that the NPA will now move expeditiously and fairly, and that a credible judicial process takes place.
