The South African Communist Party (SACP) is seriously concerned and angered by the continuing laxity of management about the safety of workers in the mining industry . This is reflected by the death of more miners, trapped underground at the Driefontein mine in Carletonville.
We are gravely concerned because it is clear that safety of workers does not seem to be a priority to the mining management. Our view is that as long as something is not profitable for the bosses it will never be treated as a priority. Our country continues to lose many workers due to negligence and recklessness on the part of management to adhere to regulated safety standards and procedures.
The SACP supports the National Union of Mine Workers in calling on the management to take seriously the safety of workers by ensuring that all the cracks and other life threatening conditions are removed as a matter of urgency. The SACP calls on government to ensure that it improves its enforcement capacity of these safety regulations.
The SACP wishes to express its most sincere condolences to the family ot the deceased mine workers, and wishes the injured workers speedy recovery.
