SACP statement on the 11th Anniversary of Freedom

Tuesday, 26 April 2005

The South African Communist Party (SACP) wishes to salute and congratulate all our people on the occasion of the celebration 11 years of our freedom from apartheid oppression.

Our special national congress committed itself to a struggle to make the second decade of our freedom a decade for the workers and the poor, therefore the 11th anniversary for us is also an important event to realise this goal. At the heart of making the second decade of freedom, a decade for the workers and the poor, is to challenge the brutal capitalist accumulation path under way in the country

This anniversary comes just few weeks after the abovementioned successful National Special Congress of the SACP and few days after a successful Alliance summit. It is in these two very important events where an Alliance driven “Know Your Neighbourhood Campaign” was endorsed. In line with this campaign we have committed ourselves to ensure that the majority of our people have access to basic necessities like clean water, quality and affordable healthcare services, education and social grants amongst others.

We shall use as the Alliance in general and as the SACP in particular these celebrations to popularise the campaign and mobilise our people mainly the workers and the poor behind it.

We call for the granting of amnesty to all those who are blacklisted by the credit bureaus, in our view this amnesty should be able to free our people so that they able have sustainable livelihood and are able to access credit for economic participation.

We call as well on our government to investigate thoroughly the relationship between this faceless and heartless institutions and the broader financial sector including with the capitalist class (the bosses), this relationship in our view functions as an anti – worker and the poor relationship, therefore it is counter-productive as it denies the majority the right to actively participate in the economy.
