19 December 2006
The SACP in the Northern Cape celebrated Family Day on the 19th December at the Yorkshire Cricket Ground in Kwa-Nobantu in Kimberley. The Family Day took place exactly a week after celebrating 16 Days of Activism & NO Violence Against Women and Children!
On this Day exactly a year ago in 2003 we observed the gruesome and horrifying murder of Mrs Jasmine Tshabala, a young woman who was brutally raped and murdered in the vicinity of the old Galeshewe Stadium, collectively all the social forces were mobilized and led to a campaign that was led by the then MEC of Safety and Liaison Connie Seoposengwe for the demolition of all the derelict buildings in the Number 2 area, which were used as hotspots for this horrendous acts.
For the past ten years the 16 Days of Activism has marked activities around the world to end gender violence. The 16 Days Campaign has been used to create a global movement to raise awareness, to address policy and legal issues, to campaign for the protection of victims and survivors of violence and to call for the elimination of all forms of gender violence.
The Party hence dedicated this Day to the Tshabalala Family and all the Victims Violence, but the irony in the Tshabalala case is that the police have not interacted with the Tshabalala Family to appriase them on the case and if any suspects had been apprehended. The family was and still is still traumatised by the loss of their daughter and indicated they have heard nothing to date from the Police Services and were still hoping that the culprits would be apprehended for this act so that justice must take it's cause.
We therefore call on the Departments of Justice and Safety as we are appproaching a new year to act swiftly and speedily on the matter including all other related matters perpetrated against women and children
