29 November; 2004
The South African Communist Party (SACP), together with the PT (Workers' Party) of Brazil, has been invited to attend the 27th Meeting of European Communist and Left Parties, taking place from 3rd to 5th December 2004 in Rome, Italy. This forum is made up of more than 20 parties; many of which have representatives in the European Parliament (MEPs).
The purpose of the gathering is to discuss the current processes of regional integration and globalisation, with a particular focus on Europe, Africa and Latin America. The forum will also exchange views and take resolutions on the role of communist and left forces in these processes.
The SACP will also engage its European sister parties around the establishment of a communist/left solidarity network between European and Southern African left parties and movements. The primary focus of this network will be to engage on EU/Southern African trade and other relations, as well as the building of a network of socialist left parties and movements in both regions. This is informed by the current lack of communist and other left discussion on EU/SADC relations, as well as solidarity activities by these forces in support of integration and development beneficial to workers.
In addition the SACP will also meet with the President of the National Association of Co-operatives in Italy to exchange views and establish co-operation and technical assistance in building a co-operative movement in South Africa.
The SACP delegation will be led by the General Secretary, Cde Blade Nzimande, accompanied by the National Treasurer, Cde Phillip Dexter and Mazibuko Jara, the Head of the Office of the General Secretary.
