Comrade Selby was one of the veterans of our movement. He died in Leipzig in Germany on 27 August 2002. He died of a short illness, shortly before he could celebrate his 84th birthday. The SACP will be participating in this comrade?s unveiling on Sunday, 14 November 2004.
Comrade Selby traveled the whole world as an ambassador for the oppressed people of South Africans. He was passionate about the liberation of his people. His contribution was not limited to the South African struggle for liberation. He was a true internationalist fighting against global politics as it impacts on the working class internationally.
He will be well remembered for his achievement in Sweden which played a significant contribution in cementing the solidarity between that country and the ANC in exile. Such that South Africa still has very close ties with Sweden to this.
He was an all rounder, who celebrated life right up to the end, such that even before his death he was still referred to as "Mr. Peace race? linked to his achievement of running in 20 marathons at the age of 70.
