Issued by the YCL National Secretary’ s Office
7 September 2004
After the many years white farmers have benefited from Apartheid South Africa, they still cause havoc for a democratic country by ‘milking’ the Land and Agrarian Reform of the State millions of rands by ballooning land prices.
Of the 14% or so arable land in the country, less than 1% of that is black owned and even worse, 80% of black farmers are in the business only for subsistence.
We believe that this situation should change. The YCL believes that central to changing the lives of the many South Africans is the question of land, and that as long as this historical factor is not changed, and that ownership of land remains in the hands of white people, we will still see less change.
We continue the call that the private property clause in the constitution should be looked into, and that the time has come to take drastic actions against those who frustrate change. We believe that the ANC-led government has made considerable concessions, and that enough is enough.
The YCL will join the SACP’ s RED OCTOBER Campaign’s land and Agrarian Reform, and will continue raising the question of land ownership and the fact that it belongs to the people.
