State should save matriculants, negotiate in good faith

7 September 2004

The Young Communist League supports the decision of Public Sector Trade Unions to go on a rolling mass action on the 16 September 2004 and calls on the state to negotiate in good faith.

We are extremely worried that the state resorts to public blackmail, especially of the teacher’s trade unions, in the process of negotiations.

We believe that the current wage negotiations dispute could have been long resolved, and that in as much as teachers should teach, and public servants should serve the public, it will be unfair to expect them to do so with perfection without better wages.

The YCL calls on the state to consider the implications for the matriculants and ensure that they have the better service at the end of the day as they face their matric examinations.

As we said before, we will call on our members, of whom some are in the public service, to join the Public Service Trade Unions in their endeavour to better their wages, and consequently, their lives.
