PRESS STATEMENT AFTER ALLIANCE SECRETARIAT

Issued by: ANC, COSATU, SACP, SANCO Johannesburg

1 September 2004

The Alliance Secretariat met this morning at Chief Albert Luthuli House in Johannesburg. The meeting was attended by ANC Secretary General Kgalema Motlanthe, COSATU General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi, SACP General Secretary Blade Nzimande, and SANCO Secretary General Linda Mngomezulu.

Among the matters considered were preparations for the Alliance Summit, which had been scheduled for the coming weekend. The main objective of the Alliance Summit is to agree upon a comprehensive programme of action towards the practical realisation of the People's Contract to Create Work and Fight Poverty.

The Secretariat received a report on work conducted by the respective policy and organising departments of the Alliance partners on developing this comprehensive programme of action. While substantial progress has been made, the Secretariat decided further work was required to consolidate the draft programme ahead of the Summit. This would include the holding of a 10-a-side meeting of senior leadership of the Alliance to consider the draft programme. For these reasons the Secretariat agreed to postpone the Summit to a date later this year.

The media will be notified of the dates for the Summit in due course.
