Press Conference of the SACP Central Committee after its first meeting following the 14 April Elections

The 11th Congress Central Committee (CC) of the South African Communist Party (SACP) started its 8th Plenary Session (its second meeting for 2004) in Johannesburg on 14 May and will conclude this meeting this morning of 16 May. This was the CC’s first plenary session since the 14 April elections.

The CC will release its extensive statement at a Press Conference to be held as follows: -

TIME : 12h30 – 13h00 (NB - the time has been moved from the original starting time of 13h30)
VENUE : SACP Head Office, 3rd floor, COSATU House, 1 Leyds Street, corner Biccard, Braamfontein (Johannesburg)

The CC statement will include the following:

• SACP assessment of the 14 April elections, results and the current balance of forces
• SACP perspectives and positions on the way forward to implement the ANC Manifesto and governance programme
• Mass campaigns and work arising from the above
• Report of the launch of the SACP's Dora Tamana Savings and Credit Cooperative (DTSACCO)
• Way forward on the SACP-led campaign to make banks serve the people including an SACP response to recent developments on the financial sector charter

The Founding Meeting of the DTSACCO will be held today (16 May) from 09h30 to 12h00, 10th floor Boardroom, COSATU House, Bramfontein. This DTSACCO is the SACP's savings and credit co-operative which is significant step forward in the struggle for a co-operative banking sector in South Africa. The DTSACCO Founding Meeting is open to the media and the public.
