Brenda Fassie: Working Class Hero

10 May 2004

The South African Communist Party (SACP) dips its revolutionary banner to honour and mourn the tragic passing away of Brenda Fassie. We share the deep pain, shock and grief of her family, friends and millions of fans.

Growing as a black woman in the working class township of Langa, Brenda Fassie knew the pain and humiliation of apartheid. She knew what it meant to be denied a good life opportunity because of her race, her gender and her class origins.

Despite all this, she rose to be an icon making a contribution to the anti-apartheid struggle and to a new South African culture. In many ways, she epitomised the struggle of forging a new and diverse South African and African identity.

We will miss her.
