The Financial Sector Campaign Coalition is in full support of the protest action announced earlier today by COSATU and the SA Clothing and Textile Workers Union (SACTWU) against certain retailers and finance sector companies in support of the campaign to buy local and to save jobs.
Job losses are of concern to all working and poor people.
The FSCC will be mobilising its 55 member organisations and their members to join the protest actions as announced. The FSCC believes that the collusion between certain retailers and the finance sector requires investigation and exposure through protest action.
As the SACTWU report released today shows, SACTWU has taken numerous steps negotiating with employers that resulted in most, but not all, retailers signing a ground-breaking declaration on local sourcing of clothing products. This refusal to sign the declaration is against the spirit, content and letter of the agreement signed in June last year at the Growth and Development Summit. This failure also means more job losses and more vulnerability to the vissicitudes of the capitalist financial sector in our country.
The FSCC calls on all South Africans to support the SACTWU action in order to protct jobs, to ensure that the economy grows and develops and to ensure that the retail and financial sectors are transformed to contribute to development by putting people before profits.
