Young Communist League to Hold National Consultative Conference

4 September

The Young Communist League will have its First National Consultative Conference this weekend, starting on Friday 05 September 2003 to Sunday 07 September 2003 at the University of Pretoria (Hammanskraal Campus).

The Conference will be attended by 150 delegates drawn from all 9 provinces, 40 districts and 200 branches across the country. In attendance will also be observers from the ANC Youth League, SASCO, COSAS, Young Christian Students, Students for Christian Action and the Progressive Youth Alliance.

Comrade Willie Madisha, COSATU President and SACP Political Bureau Member, will officially open the Conference on Saturday morning, 6 September (from 10h00 to 11h00). Jeremy Cronin, SACP Deputy General Secretary, will also address the Conference at 14h00 on Saturday, 6 September.

The Conference is the culmination of processes to re-establish the YCL as per resolution of the 11th Congress of the South African Communist Party (SACP) held in July 2002. The Conference will focus on debating recommendations on draft resolutions for the Re-establishment Congress of the YCL to be held in December 2003. This gives an opportunity to the working class youth of South Africa to engage and grapple with issues related to the youth from a working class perspective.

At the Conference, there will be a panel discussion on youth mobilisation for the 2004 General Elections. This will assist the YCL to formulate and pronounce its strategy for youth mobilisation in the coming elections.
