Blade Nzimande to Address Annual Conference of Savings and Credit Co-Operatives in Durban

11 July 2003

Tomorrow, the General Secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP), Blade Nzimande, will address the 2003 Annual Conference of the Savings and Credit Co-operatives League (SACCOL) of South Africa as detailed below:

DATE - Saturday, 12 July 2003
TIME - 9h00 to 9h30
VENUE - Four Seasons Hotel, 85 Gillespie Road, Durban

SACCOL brings together more than 20 000 South Africans who are members of 25 savings and credit co-operatives with collective savings of more than R15 million. "SACCOL is the nucleus of a future democratic, people-owned and people-driven co-operative bank", said Nzimande.

The SACP-led campaign to transform South African banks is premised on the demand for legislation and policy to promote and encourage co-operative banks which would be different from existing private capitalist banks.

SACCOL provides its members with savings, loans and insurance services at competitive interest rates far lower than those charged by private banks.

Nzimande's speech will be available on the SACP website from 16h00 this afternoon (the speech is embargoed until delivery tomorrow morning).
