Ephraim Mogale, SACP Provincial Chairperson, Dies in Car Accident

The South African Communist Party (SACP) is saddened by the tragic death of its Mpumalanga Provincial Chairperson and Member of its Central Committee, Ephraim Mogale.

Comrade Mogale died in a car accident on the evening of Tuesday, 27 May 2003. He was on his way from the provincial legislature in Nelspruit to a meeting of the SACP's Provincial Working Committee which was held in Witbank.

In his short but fruitful life, Comrade Mogale played an important role in the anti-aprtheid struggle and in the post-apartheid transformation of our country. He was elected as the first president of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) when it was launched in 1983. He was part of the MK underground and received military and political training in the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. He also served a prison term for his political activities in Robben Island.

At the time of his death he as an ANC Member of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature after he served from 1999 to 2002 as an ANC Member of the National Assembly.

He was also a member of ANC Provincial Executive Committee in the Mpumalanga Province.

The SACP will issue as full obituary and statement as more information is being gathered on the car accident and Mogale's life. The SACP dips its banner to in honour of this African Communist who died so tragically and suddenly whilst in service of our country's poor and working people.
