The SACP Mourns the Death of Mrs Mabel Timakwe

17 October 2002

The South African Communist Party (SACP) is saddened to hear of the news of the death of Mrs. Mabel Timakwe, the sister of former President Nelson Mandela.

The SACP sends its condolences and support to Comrade Nelson Mandela, the Timakwe family, the Mandela family and the community of Mqekezweni who knew and respected Mrs. Timakwe for her contribution to community affairs. We share their pain, grief and grave sense of loss.

We hope and trust that during this dark hour the families and the community will gain strength and solace in the fact that Mrs. Timakwe lived long enough to see the demise of apartheid which was subsidised by the unpaid labour of millions of rural women like her who it also denied dignity and a decent life.
