SACP Salutes Brazilian Worker's Party for Its Election Victory

7 October 2002

The South African Communist Party salutes Comrade Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and the Workers’ Party of Brazil for the first-round victory in yesterday’ presidential election in Brazil. We believe that this puts him in a good position to eventually win the final round of elections.

The SACP also appreciates the good performance scored by other forces of the left as indicated in the results - LULA (Workers’ Party) - 46,63%); SERRA (Social Democratic Party) - 23,73%; GAROTINHO (Democratic Party) - 16,79% CIRO GOMES (Popular Socialist Party) - 12,38%.

Irrespective of the final outcome of the presidential elections, the SACP believes that this first round result is an unequivocal signal to the entire world that neo-liberal and free-market policies slavishly followed by successive Brazilian governments do not work. The poor and working people of Brazil have shown decisively that it is pro-poor and pro-working class policies and programmes which are best guaranteed to ensure a better life for all. This result is also a clear indication that poor and working people across the world are standing up in struggle against capitalist globalisation and neo-liberalism.

The SACP calls on all poor and working people in South Africa and across the world to join their Brazilian brothers, sisters and comrades in the ongoing struggle for a fair, just and better world.
