SACP To Picket at the Swaziland Border Demanding the Release of Mario Masuku

06 February 2002

The Mpumalanga Province of the South African Communist Party (SACP) will picket against the government of Swaziland the South Africa/Swaziland Border in Oshoek on Friday as detailed below. This picket is in support of the demand for the release of Mario Masuku, the president of the People's United Democratic Movement, who is currently on an illegitimate sedition trial in Swaziland.

The Mpumalanga Province has immediate social, cultural, historical and economic ties with the toiling and oppressed people of Swaziland who live under the totalitarian tinkhundla regime led by King Mswati. Currently, the Mpumalanga Province of the SACP is also part of initiatives to support families which were forcibly removed in KaMkhweli and Macetjeni villages in Swaziland because they refused the illegitimate imposition of a chief by King Mswati. These families are now staying in a refugee camp in Amsterdam in the Mpumalanga province.

The SACP calls on all democratic and progressive organisations in Mpumalanga to support the picket, the KaMkhweli and Macetjeni families and the demands for the release of Mario Masuku, the release of all political prisoners in Swaziland and the democratisation of Swaziland.
