As part of the Red October Campaign to Make Banks Serve the People, the South African Communist Party (SACP) will host a Public Meeting for the Gauteng Province as detailed below.
DATE : Sunday, 11 November 2001
TIME : 10h00 - 13h00
VENUE : Vhuwani Secondary School Chiawelo, Soweto
The SACP General Secretary, Blade Nzimande will address this Public Meeting reporting to the people of Soweto about how far the campaign to make banks serve the people is. The main demand for discussion at this Public Meeting will be the demand for banks to drop all bank charges for pensioners and other recipients of welfare grants. The community of Chiawelo has a large number of pensioners.
The meeting will also be attended by the ANC, SANCO, the ANC Women's League,local councillors, local churches and representatives of small business associations and youth organisations.
Through this meeting the SACP will also collect and consolidate demands on how to fundamentally transform the entire financial sector in our country. This is in advance of the NEDLAC Summit on the financial sector now scheduled to be held in the first quarter of 2002.
