SACP Statement On Death Threats Against Comtrade Willie Madisha

24 October 2001

The South African Communist Party (SACP) is shocked and outraged that Comrade Willie Madisha has received several death threats.

Comrade Madisha is a member of the SACP Central Committee and the president of both the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and the South African Democratic Teacher's Union (SADTU).

The SACP regards these threats in a serious light. These threats are an attack against organised workers and our country's democratic constitutional dispensation. The threats are also an attack on all our democratic organisations and masses of our people who contributed to the creation of a democratic order in our country.

The SACP calls on the relevant authorities to go to the root of these threats and ensure that the law deals accordingly with those perpetuating these threats. The SACP calls on all its members and supporters and the South African public at large to assist in whatever way possible with the investigation of these threats.
