SACP Salutes Samora Machel and Julius Nyerere

18 October 2001

Tomorrow, October 19th, marks 15th Anniversary of the death of the first President of a free Mozambique, Comrade Samora Machel. 2 years ago this October, the whole world mourned the death and celebrated the life of the first President of a free Tanzania, comrade Julius Nyerere.

The South African Communist Party (SACP) expresses its complete solidarity with the people of Mozambique, Tanzania and the entire African continent, the FRELIMO and CCM parties, and the Machel and Nyerere families as they remember these great African revolutionaries.

The SACP is heartened by the Samora Machel Memorial Event to be held at Mbuzini, Nelspruit in the Mpumalanga province tomorrow. Mbuzini is where this great hero's plane crashed 15 years ago. We also salute the formation of SAMIGOS, the South African-Mozambique Friendship Association as an important step in taking forward the solidarity between the peoples of our two countries.

As the SACP, we seek to carry forward the banner of these African socialists and fore-bearers and continue with the fight for democracy, solidarity, peace, justice, social progress and the eventual winning of socialism in our country, region and continent.
